General Fencing Questions

New to fencing or just need a refresher? These are the questions we get most often from homeowners and property managers across Amador and Calaveras Counties.

We install wood, vinyl, and chain link fences for both residential and commercial properties. Wood fences are popular for privacy and curb appeal, vinyl is low-maintenance and long-lasting, and chain link works well for security perimeters, dog runs, and commercial sites. During your free estimate, we'll talk through which option fits your property and budget.

Yes, estimates are always free. We'll come out to your property, measure the job, and walk you through your options before any money changes hands. There's no pressure and no obligation. Contact us to schedule yours.

Most residential fence projects are done in one to two days. Larger commercial jobs or properties with difficult terrain may take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline during the estimate so you can plan around it.

Yes. D Fence Man is fully licensed and insured in the state of California. We've been doing this since 1997, and we carry the coverage you need to protect your property throughout the project.

We use quality lumber for wood fences, premium vinyl fence panels from reputable manufacturers, and galvanized or coated steel for chain link. We don't cut corners on materials because a fence is only as good as what goes into it. If you have specific material preferences or questions, just ask when we come out for your estimate.

Permit requirements vary by city and county. In many areas, fences under a certain height don't require a permit, but taller fences, corner lots, or properties in HOAs may have different rules. We recommend checking with your local planning department before starting. We're happy to help you understand what applies to your property - just reach out and we'll point you in the right direction.

Yes. We handle everything from backyard privacy fences for homeowners to security perimeter fences for commercial properties, storage yards, and job sites. Check out our residential and commercial fencing pages for details on what we offer.

Installation & Repair Questions

Planning an installation or dealing with a damaged fence? Here's what you need to know before we arrive and after the job is done.

The main thing is to clear the fence line of any large plants, debris, or stored items so our crew can work without obstacles. If you have a dog, make arrangements to keep them away from the work area during the job. We'll call 811 before we dig to locate underground utilities, but it's helpful if you know where any privately installed lines (irrigation, electrical to a shed) are located.

If a few boards are rotted or a post has shifted, repair usually makes sense and costs less. If the posts are rotting at the ground line, the fence is leaning significantly, or damage covers a large section, replacement often works out to be more cost-effective in the long run. We'll give you an honest assessment during your free estimate. Learn more about our residential fence repair and commercial fence repair services.

A fence on a shared property line is a neighbor issue, not just a fencing issue. In California, costs for a shared boundary fence can sometimes be split between neighbors, but we recommend getting written agreement before work begins. If there's a dispute about where the property line actually falls, a survey is worth it before you commit to a location. We'll install wherever you direct us once the boundary is confirmed.

Wood fences do best with a fresh coat of stain or sealant every two to three years. This protects the wood from moisture and UV damage. Keep soil and mulch from piling up against the base of the boards, and trim any plants that press against the fence. Catching small issues early - a loose board, a post starting to lean - prevents bigger problems down the road. Learn more about wood fences.

Vinyl is low-maintenance, but it does pick up dirt and algae over time, especially in shaded areas. A garden hose handles most everyday dirt. For tougher buildup, mix warm water with a bit of dish soap and scrub with a soft brush. A diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water) works well on mildew or green algae stains - just rinse thoroughly afterward. Avoid harsh abrasives that can scratch the surface. A well-built wood fence that's regularly maintained lasts 15 to 20 years in our region. Fences that go without staining or that sit in constantly wet soil may start showing wear in 8 to 10 years. The type of wood matters too - cedar and redwood are naturally more rot-resistant than pine. We use good materials and set our posts properly to give you the longest life possible. Contact us if you'd like to talk through your options.

Yes, we can tear out and haul away your existing fence as part of the project. Just let us know during the estimate so we can factor it into the quote. In some cases, old posts can be reused if they're still in good shape, which can reduce cost - we'll tell you upfront whether that applies to your situation.

Just Ask. We're Easy to Reach.
